Sorry, you don’t qualify. Maybe, next time. You’re too healthy.
I received this response yesterday in an email (well, it was said in a slightly different manner) after I received an invitation to apply to get a health coach through my employer.
If you work for a large corporation, you know that when an email is sent out to all employees, it’s unlikely that people open them, never mind read them. I’m curious to know how many people opened this email and clicked the link to see if they qualify.
Even after I clicked the link to see if I qualified, they immediately said no but then there was another link to apply anyway. They proceeded to ask me the same questions (they added one new one). This time they entertained the thought for about a minute by sending me an email saying they were reviewing the application. Then right away rejected again. If I was rejected the first time why was it even an option to apply anyway? Side note: I found this company and researched their program 6 months prior to even receiving this email so I knew I didn’t qualify and wanted to see what they had going from a consumer's perspective.
The program is a health coach driven transformation plan called Prevent. The company is called Omada Health if you’re interested in doing your own research. They are directing Prevent towards people who are at high risk for chronic illnesses such as Type 2 Diabetes and Heart Disease. They are doing really great things for the health care system and we definitely need this service for Americans who are at high risk or already diagnosed. I very much believe in their mission.
But what about me?! What about the people who are healthy right now and are really interested in staying healthy for the rest of their life? What about us!?
I, technically, am predisposed to both diabetes and heart disease. I even have genetic proof thanks to 23andMe. And the truth of this issue is that everyone is predisposed if they don’t take certain measures to prevent it.
After speaking to a friend about Prevent, we concluded it shouldn’t be called that. It should be called Respond. (And by the way, he also applied, didn’t qualify either, and also has these illnesses in his family.)
The thing about the two of us and my other health-passionate friends is that we take major actions towards our health. We have personal trainers, coaches, counselors, practitioners, and also have made it our hobby to be healthy which means we are constantly researching and investigating what knowledge and technology is available in the world.
Not everyone has the time or money to do this. Not everyone has the attention span or desire to do this self-inspired work. And that’s okay.
However, that doesn’t mean that the health system should ‘ignore’ us because we aren’t sick yet. There needs to be something for us. There needs to be a packaged service that facilitates staying healthy. We could call it Support! Alas, that’s why I started Global Joy.
